Today, style & fashion are a big thing. You can tell a lot about a person by what they wear and how they present themselves. Although you might look at someone & think you can’t afford that style, I want to tell you, you don’t have to spend a bunch of money to have a nice style. Everyone has their own style and that’s 100% okay.
In fact, there are so many styles that are ‘in’ right now. Some of the 80’s and 90’s are making a reappearance. Oversized, mom jeans, varsity and windbreaker jackets are all in style. Find things that you like and wear it!
1. Make your wardrobe unique.
By unique I don’t mean you have to wear all the bright colored items you own all at once, even though you could do that if you wanted. It would be an eye-catcher but by unique I mean you don’t have to wear what everybody else is wearing. Wear things that you personally love. Make your style, YOUR style. It’s okay to be different. My mom always told me “You don’t have to be a trend follower. Be a trendsetter.” If you’re comfortable and you like it, wear it. It doesn’t matter what others think of you. I mean, think about it, will their opinion of your clothes matter 5-10 years from now?
2. Don’t be ashamed to go to thrift stores.
Thrift stores can actually have some pretty nice things! I have found some of my favorite clothing items in thrift stores. One of my favorite things to wear at the moment is a Nike sweater that I found at Goodwill for less than $5 dollars. It’s a men’s sweater, its a little oversized on me and I love it! The men’s section can have some nice gender neutral things!
3. Upcycling is the way to go
If you really don’t have much to spend at the moment, find ways to upcycle what you have. Put a few rips in your old jeans, make a crop top out of an old t-shirt or draw some designs on some old shoes. Even painting your nails or adding a few accessories can bring together an outfit!
4. A new hairstyle can spice up any outfit.
Honestly, I usually have my hair up in a ponytail. It’s quick and convenient. Personally, my hair is long, thick and rarely ever holds a curl. Therefore whenever I want curls, I have to braid my hair, wait overnight then take the braids out the next day. But I encourage you to try something new! If you usually have straight hair, try curling it and putting half of it up or vice-versa. If you really wanted to do something different, change your hair color! Make sure to check with your parents first though!
5. Nail polish remover is for more than your nails.
Here’s a life hack if you didn’t know already. If you have shoes with white soles but they are a little dirty, you can use nail polish remover to clean them! (If the sole is Black it might remove the black pigment) Just take a cotton ball & some polish remover then scrub the soles. They look brand new! You might be surprised by the outcome. It’s saved some of my shoes from going to the trash & my wallet from losing more money on shoes.
6. Garage Sales are your friends.
In my city, we have what we call ‘City Wide Garage Sale Day’. It’s pretty self-explanatory but if you haven’t heard of it, it’s where people from all over the city have garage sales on the same day and if you want, you can pay 5 bucks to be put on a map telling people where your sale is. This a great way to make some extra money! But it can also benefit other people looking to find a deal on some used items. You can find some real treasures at garage sales for decent prices! If your city has a day like this I would highly recommend checking it out. You never know when you might find something cute at a reasonable price even some jewellery pieces can really bring together a simple outfit.
7. Put aside shopping money.
Each time you get paid, put some money back just for clothing items. Don’t use the money for something else. Once you have enough for a little shopping spree go buy some new things.
8. Know what’s current.
Okay now, this is kind of embarrassing but I’m going to let you in on a little secret. Recently, I was at a college retreat. I was sitting on a wooden windowsill & my friend was sitting about a foot away from me. The classroom we were in started to get more crowded so I scooted down closer to my friend but when I did… my jeans got caught on a nail & ripped in the back, on my thigh! I played it off cool but the people sitting next to me definitely heard it! It sounded just like in the movies. At first, I was embarrassed but luckily I had my windbreaker that I tied around my waist. Then I remembered that having a slit in the back of your jeans is now in style! What a relief it was knowing that. See? Even though my situation was awkward & embarrassing it really didn’t turn out to be that bad.
Bonus: Be Yourself!
Style isn’t just about what you wear. It’s about who you are. Your personality affects your style. Some girls like to wear flowy dresses while others are good in a t-shirt with jeans.
I hope some of these tips and tricks helped you out! If you try any of them feel free to shoot me a message or a picture to either of my socials down below! I’d love to see what you came up with.
