Does your work life seem unbearable, not due to the actual job but just, because of the other people that work there? I have felt this before, wanting to quit the fastest I could. But if I had quit I would have never learned how to deal with a negative environment. I also wouldn’t have realized that staying positive in a negative work environment can be very difficult, but it is not impossible. I have 5 tips to help you overcome this and come out on top.
1. Analyze if you are contributing to the negative environment
You can’t complain about the very thing that you are apart of everyday. Think about any moments where you have allowed yourself to be negative around other people. I don’t say this to make you feel bad about yourself but to help with perspective. People will think you are a hypocrite if you are saying you want positivity at the workplace yet you are just as negative as others with your actions.
2. Take baby steps
An atmosphere of negativity will not welcome a band of positivity all at once. That’s why the phrase “small acts of kindness exist” because to shift other people’s mind it just takes little acts building together.
3. Change your attitude about work
I know this isn’t a nice thing to say but its reality. You have this job and are still at this job with the environment you can’t stand because you need it. Whether you’re paying for college, trying to make rent on your place, or both––you need this job right now. Attitude affects what you say, what you listen for, how you see and interact with things. Your attitude affects everything around you. Having a good attitude can help overlook the silly things and get on with your day.
4. Find an outlet
There are too many of young adults out here who are suffering all day at a bad job to come home and lounge around all night for it to happen again the next day. You need to have balance in your life. Having balance in your life will help ease your mind when at work and reduce your chances of having a breakdown. An outlet can be anything that helps you relieve stress and make you feel happy or feel like a better person.
If you volunteer, you are surrounded by people who believe in something bigger than themselves. People who don’t want to be selfish or are trying to learn how to. Everyone volunteering is in a good atmosphere they are giving back and are usually very positive. Whatever the mission of a volunteer unit they rely on teamwork to get it all done. With teamwork comes communication and more gets done with positive communication than negative. Plus, the positive interaction around a good atmosphere is something that you can’t have too much of.
